June 25, 1966 - Marks 80th Birthday

Mrs. Lawrence (Bessie) Sams, 1609 Osborne, has been honored this past week in observance of her 80th birthday.

The Brookville hotel was the scene of a Saturday evening family dinner for her.

Present were two of her four sons, Mr. and Mrs. Vaden Sams, Culver, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Sams and family, Salina; three of her five daughters, Mrs. Wilber Roy, Shawnee Mission; Mrs. E. G. Valle, Mr. Valle and family, Patterson, N.J., and Velma Sams, of the home; her brother-in-law, John Sams, Minneapolis, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lora Brown, Salina.

The honoree's other children are Col. Burton K. Sams, Eglin AFB, Fla.; Lt. Col. William W. Sams, Albuquerque, N.M.; Mr. and Mrs. Les Jilka, Hill City and family and Mrs. Leo Vicek, San Diego, Calif.

She has 25 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Sams was born June 21, 1886 in Minneapolis, and has lived in this vicinity most of her life.

A card shower also was held for her. She received many greetings.

(Jun. 21, 1886 - Jun. 17, 1970)

SALINA, Kan. -- Services for Mrs. Bessie Mae Sams, 83, a retired schoolteacher, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Unversity United Methodist Church. She died Wednesday.

Born in Minneapolis, Kan., she moved to Salina in 1940.

Her husband, Lawrence L., died in 1959.

Survivors includ four sons, Vaden, Culver, Kan., Ret. Col. B. K. Sams, Greenville, Tex., Col. W. W. Sams, stationed with the Air Force in Satellite, Fla., and Larry, Salina; five daughters, Mrs. Agnes Roy, Shawnee, Kan., Miss Velma Sams, Salina, Mrs. Margaret Ulcek, San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Lois Valle, Patterson, N.J., Mrs Bethel Jilka, Hill City, Kan., and three sisters, Mrs.Dora Hawkins, Minneapolis, Mrs. Hattie Smith, Leavenworth, Kan., and Mrs. Gladys Peters, Wamego, Kan.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Chapel Funeral Home has charge.
